After Work Featured: Javi Fabrega

Javier Fabrega (Marsh Sessions)

Down in Jacksonville Beach, where flood tides push across the grass flats and tailing fish light up the marsh, you’ll often find Javier Fabrega standing on the bow with a fly rod in hand — scanning, hunting, and soaking in the quiet.

By day, Javier is a tech executive immersed in the fast-paced world of AI, data, and innovation. By choice, he steps into something completely different when he hits the water. Fly fishing inshore for Redfish isn’t just a hobby for him — it’s a reset button.

“It brings me peace after long weeks at work. It’s the total opposite of technology, AI, and large data sets I work with.”

From the Panama Canal to the Florida Marsh

Javier’s first fishing memory takes us far from Northeast Florida — chasing Peacock Bass in Gatun Lake inside the Panama Canal. That early experience planted the seed, but over time, fly fishing — particularly sight fishing for Redfish — became his passion.

Now, most of his time is spent inshore, hunting tails on flood tides. And for Javier, it’s about much more than just the grab.

When asked what drives him — the catch, the chase, the process, or the people — his answer says everything:

“Hunting for Redfish. I’m ok with not catching a fish every time I get to fish. Also, our amazing fly fishing community.”

That mindset reflects patience, discipline, an appreciation for the craft itself and the people he shares it with.

Full Circle Moments

While the pursuit keeps him coming back, his favorite fishing memory isn’t about a trophy catch.

“The first time I shared the bow with my kids on a flood tide.”

There’s something powerful about passing it on — about watching the next generation experience that same quiet anticipation as a push of water creeps across the grass.

Like many of us, Javier wrestles with finding the right balance between fishing and family time. But when those two worlds meet on the water, that’s when it all comes together.

Lessons from the Water

Fishing has taught Javier one of the hardest — and most valuable — life skills:

“How to have more patience and be present in the moment.”

In a career defined by speed, metrics, and outcomes, fly fishing demands the opposite: stillness, awareness, and acceptance.

And when it comes to conservation, he keeps it simple and honest:

“More catch and release. Let’s be honest, steak tastes so much better than Redfish.”

Protecting the local fishery today ensures that future anglers — including his kids — can experience those same flood tide mornings.

What’s Next?

There’s still one fish on his bucket list:

The legendary Golden Dorado in the Bolivian jungle.

If he could fish anywhere tomorrow?

Bolivia. Without a doubt.

Until then, you’ll find him scanning the marsh grass of Jacksonville Beach, embracing the quiet, and living by a quote that perfectly sums up why we all do this:

“The time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time.”Bertrand Russell

Javier reminds us that fishing isn’t about escape — it’s about return. Return to patience. Return to presence. Return to what actually matters.

We’re proud to call Javi a friend and couldn't be happier to feature him as our first After Work Featured
